What is
PIGMENTATION?
Melanin is a pigment that gives our skin its colour. Skin pigmentation occurs when patches of our skin turn a darker shade due to the excessive presence of melanin. These are the typical causes of pigmentation:
- – Sun exposure
- – Genetic predisposition
- – Hormonal changes
- – Certain medications
- – Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) following a skin injury or inflammation

Laser Treatments for Pigmentation
With a variety of lasers available at Halley Medical Aesthetics, our doctors can prescribe a suitable treatment for you upon assessing your skin condition.

PicoSure
PicoSure is a picosecond laser that delivers ultra-short pulse bursts of energy to the skin in picoseconds (trillionths of a second) to target pigment particles without affecting the surrounding tissues. It then shatters pigment particles into tiny dust-like particles, which are then absorbed by the lymphatic system and eliminated naturally.
Fotona PQX Picolaser
The Fotona PQX Picolaser (Fotona StarWalker PQX Pico Laser) features two laser wavelengths to remove pigmentation, lighten acne scars, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin tone and texture. It is able to deliver an intense blast of energy within a very short period of time and that allows the laser to scatter the pigmentation in our skin without producing heat that will damage the skin. This reduces downtime to close to zero.
Its versatility is also due to the handpieces of different spot sizes, allowing doctors to treat a variety of skin concerns.
Pico Power of 3
Pico Power of 3 combines Fotona PQX Picolaser (Fotona StarWalker PQX Pico Laser) with the PicoSure Laser and makes use of three different pico laser wavelengths for a more customisable and effective pigmentation removal and skin toning treatment.
The doctor will create a customised regime that combines both lasers to specifically address your skin’s concerns.
Fraxel Dual Laser
The Fraxel Dual laser targets damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. It treats only a fraction of skin at a time, leaving the surrounding tissues untouched, which greatly reduces downtime. This laser treatment:
- – Lightens pigmentation, dark spots, and scars
- – Improves skin tone and texture
FAQS
Under Singapore’s medical regulations, laser treatments have to be performed by medical doctors who are certified and/or fulfil requirements needed to perform the procedure. All lasers used in clinics are approved by Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA).
Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area before the procedure. After 15-20 minutes, the numbing cream is removed before treatment begins.
You may need protective eye goggles depending on the treatment area. Each session takes 30-45 minutes depending on the area treated and the skin condition.
Certain lasers like the PicoSure laser may leave your skin looking flushed like you’ve got a sunburn for a few days but otherwise, there is no need to take leave from work for the treatment. It is best to consult your doctor on the expected recovery time.
The doctor will address this concern before treatment begins, but laser treatments are generally very tolerable. Any discomfort is managed with the help of the numbing cream.
The doctor may prescribe multiple sessions depending on your requirements and desired result. Your doctor will advise you during consultation.
You may resume normal activities post treatment. Minimise sun exposure for a week and apply sunblock daily on the treated area.
Your doctor may prescribe creams to aid skin healing. A clinic-only, post-treatment cooling mask infused with chamomile is available to hydrate skin and minimise redness after treatment.
As we are constantly exposed to the sun, it is recommended that you keep pigmentation at bay with no downtime chemical peels and mask, as well as treatment facials.
Treatments like Halley’s Whitening Peel and light-based therapies like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) not only lightens pigmented, dark spots, they also rejuvenate your skin. Consult your doctor on post-laser programmes suitable for your skin.
